Fantastic experience
Sunderland College Students Ben Weatherley and Nathan Richardson are ecstatic after winning a spot at the finals of a global competition.
The talented students were extremely successful in passive briefs where they had to 3D model and texture a skateboard. They then moved onto competing in the live heats at South Thames College in London.
They were both successful and have now claimed at spot at the finals for the UK leg of the competition, WorldSkills UK Live. The event will be held at the NEC in Birmingham on November 17th – 19th.
Matthew Hall, Sunderland College Lecturer in NextGen: Games, Animation and VFX said:
“Ben and Nathan are absolutely phenomenal students with an incredibly bright future ahead of them. They have done so well already in this very prestigious competition demonstrating high levels of resilience, professionalism and competence. I am so proud of them and the hard work they have put in to get to this stage!”
The three day competition takes place as part of WorldSkills UK’s Skills Show – the largest free experiential skills, apprenticeships and careers event in the UK. Both students will compete in a 3D Modelling competition and are hoping to place in the top three and/or win a place in the WorldSkills squad.

“The passive test was a really fun start but meeting all the other competitors made the competition a lot better. Before the live heats I was nervous but after them I felt really happy with what I achieved. My course prepared me really well for this competition, the knowledge I gained from my lecturers gave me a greater understanding of industry software packages, I have also felt very supported throughout the whole process.”
Nathan Richardson, College Student & Competitor added:
“I found the whole WorldSkills competition so far really fun and I have really put my knowledge and skills to the test. Prior to the competition, I felt nervous however after achieving so much I feel really confident. The NextGen course has definitely prepared me very well. The support of the teachers has had a real impact in helping my skills and prepare me for this event!”
The NextGen course was launched at Sunderland College in 2015 and is delivered in industry-standard facilities in the Arts Academy at Bede Campus.
