Earlier this month Sunderland College invited Loudspeaker, a public speaking workshop organisation, to their Bede campus to empower students and allow them to be more confident in using their own voice. This workshop ran over two days, delivered to 200 engineering students from different campuses studying a mixture of courses.
Public speaking and communication skills are important in helping young people with everything they need to set aspirations and achieve those goals.
The Loudspeaker workshops are delivered at the crucial point in young peoples’ lives when they are planning their next steps and shaping their career paths.
Richard Allen-Campbell, Engagement Lead at Loudspeaker who delivered the sessions said: “Over these two days, I’ve seen around 200 students from different campuses as they took part in this workshop.
“The aim of these sessions is to build confidence, providing public speaking and communication training while also touching on how to use your voice and body language in different situations. It was great to see these students engage in the workshops and leave with key takeaways – we give young people the tools to aim high and live their best lives.”
Since 2019, Loudspeaker have empowered over 150,000 young individuals, providing confidence and life skills, aiming to make life more fulfilling for young people, envisioning a world where they confidently speak out.
Emma Capes, Lecturer and Programme Leader for Advanced Manufacturing at Sunderland College added: “Loudspeaker has been such a vibrant and energetic company to bring in for our engineering students.
“The group of students was diverse with a mix of both apprentices and full-time students. Although apprentices perhaps have more experience in public speaking from their interviews and jobs, fulltime students wouldn’t necessarily have exposure to this and would benefit from the ability to speak confidently when coming to secure a job or apprenticeship in the future.
“The students really engaged with the workshops and brought a lot of energy themselves while participating in sessions, we are very proud of them.
Engineering student Lewie Straughn-Bonallie also said: “I really enjoyed the session; it was very interactive and got us involved.
“I enjoyed listening to everyone from different campuses, it was good to see the creative side of people rather than their usual quieter selves in the workshops. I was also introduced to a few new people too from the wider college.”
