Care planning relates to addressing an individual’s full range of needs whilst accounting for their circumstances and preferences. It helps individuals to become involved in decisions about their care and to achieve the outcomes they want. Care planning plays an important role in healthcare and creates a person-centred approach to care.
This qualification will allow you to understand your role in supporting the preferences and needs of individuals in relation to their care and support. It also enables you to develop and implement care plans, and contribute to the review of these by observing, monitoring and reporting on the care activities you are responsible for.
Learners wishing to undertake the certificate should be aged 19 or over. You will need to have at least a Level 1 qualification in literacy as you will be expected to write answers for assessment purposes. To assist in the delivery and understanding of this qualification, candidates should have access to details of a work environment in a relevant sector.

You will be added to our Equal platform, where you will be able to access all the learning resources and assessments to complete. You will be allocated your own personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. Your personal tutor will then assess your work and provide you with constructive feedback for each unit. All of our award-winning learning resources are of the highest quality and are designed to be engaging and interactive to keep you focused on your learning at all times. This course is available paper-based too on request.
This is a 16 week course that requires your own time management for study. You will be given submission dates to keep you focused on the 16 week timeframe.
This qualification is suitable for learners who are looking to enter into, or progress within, employment in a variety of sectors and job roles where an understanding of care planning is required.
This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19 and above.
The course is split into six manageable units:
- Unit 1: Understanding person-centred thinking and planning
- Unit 2: Care planning for the care worker
- Unit 3: Understanding nutrition and hydration in health and social care settings
- Unit 4: Principles of supporting an individual to maintain personal hygiene
- Unit 5: Understanding continence care
- Unit 6: Principles of supporting sleep.
