What’s it all about?

Are you interested in a career in health and social care? Do you aspire to have knowledge and understanding of the health and social care sector at degree level of study?

Our Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Practice aims to empower you with the knowledge and skills required to be a successful practitioner within the sector. You will have access to a range of facilities to support you with your studies and be taught by an experienced team of lecturers within the field.

You must have achieved the following qualifications to enrol onto this course:

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care
Level 3 Extended Diploma Applied General/BTEC Health and Social Care
Level 3 Extended Diploma in a relevant subject area
Access to Higher Education qualification in a related subject
Grade C/4 or equivalent level 2 in English

You will be required to undertake a Disclosure Barring Service check prior to your placement. You are required to fund this independently at a cost of £44 (Cost correct at the time of writing)

The teaching and learning focuses on being up to date and relevant to professional practice today. The programme will be taught directly face to face and will mainly be classroom based. You will also attend placement during both years of your programme. These placements will take place in the health and social care sector within the area, this can be in the public sector, but also private and charitable organisation’s. The use of the Immersive Space on campus, a 360 environment, will allow you to gain practical work experience and allow you to better prepare for your future career by transporting you into real world scenarios. Students will also have the opportunity to utilise the simulated health hub on site.
Students will be assessed in a range of ways that are responsive to the needs of the module content and are aligned to industry competencies and skills. Assessment includes but is not limited to assignments, reports, group and individual presentations, case study analysis and developing professional portfolios.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your future career.
You are required to have achieved a grade 4 in English to enrol onto this course or a Level 2 in English equivalent. If you have not yet achieved Maths it is a requirement to study this alongside your programme.

You will have the opportunity to take part in a placement which equates to one day per week from the second semester of study over the duration of the remainder of your programme.

As part of the programme you will complete a module that focuses on your placement journey and therefore attending placement is a core requirement of this programme.

We have a number of links to industry including various NHS trusts, charitable and private organisations to ensure you gain an outstanding learning experience with us and are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in industry.

In year one, first semester teaching will consist of 2 days face to face delivery and one day self- directed. In second semester it is expected that students complete one day of placement in addition.

In year two, students will have two days face to face delivery, one day in placement and one day self-directed study.

This course will take place Monday – Friday between 9.30am and 5.30pm. However, specific days and times are yet to be confirmed.

Health and Social Care is a diverse field with a vast array of opportunities for students to work in a wide range of areas. These can include for example mental health, drug and alcohol support, domestic violence. This programme will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue employment as healthcare assistants, senior health care assistants, support worker, community outreach workers or care coordinators in hospitals, residential care facilities, community organisation’s and social service agencies. In addition, this programme will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to be employed in different roles assisting the wider teams in a wide range of services for example mental health and learning disabilities. As students on this programme will develop the academic skills to study at degree level, students may also go onto higher level study.

Unravelling health patterns with epidemiology and statistics in health and social care practice
A holistic exploration of mental health
From past to present: Evolution, trends and movements in health and social care practice

What’s next?

You could progress straight into industry and gain a job in a variety of roles within the industry including in public, private and charitable organisations. (More information about specific roles in the aim section)
