In both theory and practical lessons, you will learn about animal behaviour, husbandry, health and welfare along with a range of specialist modules such as animal adaptations, animal nursing and training methods.

Our courses are very practical and students utilise our outstanding resources every day, such as the working zoological collection, farm, equine unit and kennel block.

Your progress will be assessed by a range of stimulating methods including exams, synoptic assessments (practical and theory), written assignments, course work (projects, essays, tests, presentations).
English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career.
For the Advanced Technical Certificate in Animal Management, you will need to have at least a grade 4 in either English or Maths or both. We can support you to achieve the subject that you have not achieved yet.
For the Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management, you will need to have a grade 5 or above for both English and Maths to enrol on the course.
As a key component of the course, you will take part in 150 hours of placement in industry. At least 30 hours must be undertaken external to the college, in an animal-related establishment (pet shop, kennels, vets, groomers, breeders, farms, stables etc.)
We have a number of links to industry including partnerships with various animal related industries to ensure you gain outstanding learning experience with us and are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career within industry.
The aim of the course is to develop skills and knowledge in animal management for the husbandry of a range of animal species, through a series of theory/practical lessons and industry placement, to allow you to progress to higher education or a career in the animal sector.

After completing the course, you could study a Foundation Degree at Kirkley Hall or progress to university to study a BSc (Hons) in a range of relevant subjects, such as Zoology, Animal Behaviour, Conservation, Animal Science or Animal Management.
Alternatively, you could gain employment in animal management/welfare organisations, or research. For example, you could work as an assistant zoo keeper, assistant kennel/cattery worker, dog groomer/assistant dog groomer, animal care technician, animal nutritionist, or a vet care assistant.
