Local community art projects - Solidarity Sunderland

As part of their course, our students have the opportunity to partner with organisations and artists in the community to create meaningful work that can be enjoyed across the local area.

Artist Rob MacDonald enlisted the creative support of our students, collaborating on a month long project with the local community to plan a monument for volunteers who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

MacDonald started the Solidarity Park project in 2016, with a 'living monument' he made in Spain as a central part of it and four student artworks are carved in the sculpture every year, with 'at least one' created by Sunderland students added in 2026.
