Sunderland College recently hosted a special event to celebrate receiving the STEM Assured Award from the UK STEM Foundation.
More than 150 young people and families attended the event at Bede Campus throughout the day – including pupils from local primary and secondary schools – which showcased the exciting opportunities and STEM courses available at the college’s sixth form.
They were also given a glimpse of campus life with college programme leaders running engaging and insightful demonstrations and workshops, and tours of the state-of-the-art Innovation Space and award-winning 360-degree Immersive Space.
The event demonstrated the progression opportunities in the sector with several universities sharing their Higher Education offers in Medicine, Psychology, Sports and Exercise Science and Paramedic Science. Organisations from the engineering, automation, construction, logistics and green energy industries, such as Gunt Technology, Vantec and Port of Blyth were also on hand to talk about the wide range of STEM career options available with them.
In the campus’ Theatre Eighteen, families enjoyed interactive experiments with STEM entertainers and educators, Big Science.
Adam Sams, Sunderland Sixth Form Curriculum Manager, said: “The event was a fantastic coming-together of a wide range of organisations and education providers within the STEM sector.
“Attendees were given a great insight into our STEM provision, university progression options and the wide range of careers available to them, to get them thinking about their futures.
“It was a brilliant day, a real celebration, and we’re hoping to make it an annual event. Thank you to all the organisations, universities and schools who were involved.”
Education Partnership North East (EPNE) – which comprises Sunderland College, Hartlepool Sixth Form and Northumberland College – was awarded the prestigious STEM Assured accreditation earlier this year.
The UK STEM Foundation verified and independently validated EPNE’s progress in the provision of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and training in six key category areas including Strategy and Planning, Collaboration and Consultation, Innovation, Design, Delivery, and Impact.
