Interactive workshops to help inspire students

Childcare and health and social care students took part in a series of workshops with the North East Collaborative Outreach Project (NECOP) to develop their confidence and to inspire them to fulfil their potential.

The workshops took place over three action-packed days at Sunderland Empire. During the first day, the Level 3 students had a tour and saw behind the scenes at the theatre. They then took part in an interactive workshop to help build their confidence and communication skills.

On day two they worked on interview techniques, and began the day with games relating to listening skills. They then worked in groups to compile 20 interview questions. They each took a turn in the hot seat to answer the questions. In the afternoon their workshop was based on presentation skills. They worked in teams on an Apprentice-style task to pitch a product to the rest of the group.

Their final day was theory day, based on team building and building peer support. They learnt about De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats method, and Maslow’s motivation theory to identify where they are now, where they want to be, and how they will get there.

Heather Bailey, Childcare Lecturer at Sunderland College, said:

“The students were motivated, enthusiastic and engaging. It was lovely to see them working together and enjoying themselves. Throughout the project, they developed confidence in interviewing skills and presentation techniques, which will be an asset to their future direction and help them to prepare for life after college.”

Annabelle Christie, who is in the second year of her Level 3 in Childcare and Education course, said:

“They made it very exciting. The activities are different and fun and it has developed everyone’s confidence. We have learnt better presentation skills and team building skills, which will help us prepare for going to university or getting a job.”
