Sunderland College student-athlete Cameron Watt is celebrating more success after winning five medals at the North East Region (NER) Diving Grand Prix.

The Sunderland City Dive Team dominated the competition in Leeds, with Cameron taking gold in the 3m mixed Synchro events, silver in the 1m Northumberland & Durham and 3m mixed Synchro, and NER bronze in the 3m.

The youngster, who is studying an Extended Diploma in Sport Coaching and Development and is part of the national Talented Athlete Scholorship Scheme (TASS) delivered by Sunderland College, also became the first Sunderland City diver to be named Northumberland & Durham Diver of the Year.

“I managed to overcome a disappointing first event, refocusing and learning from my mistakes,” Cameron said. “Receiving the Northumberland & Durham Diver of the Year was a total surprise and the icing on the cake.

“I would like to thank Sunderland City Dive Team, Sunderland College and the Martin Nugent Elite Performance for all of their support over the last couple of years.”

Cameron is supported in his sport and education by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, a Sport England-backed programme which supports young sports people reach their potential both on and off the field.

Carl Jones, TASS Dual Career Coordinator, added: “We are delighted to hear of Cameron’s success with the Sunderland City Dive Team, which is an outstanding achievement

“To perform to that level and then be recognised as the diver of the year is a tremendous accolade and he should be extremely proud.

“Cameron embodies a successful student-athlete, engaging with his academic course, coaching and training, and the TASS programme. We look forward to seeing how Cameron progresses both in and out of the classroom as he looks to take his next steps and achieve his goals.”Sunderland College student-athlete Cameron Watt is celebrating more success after winning five medals at the North East Region (NER) Diving Grand Prix.
