Sunderland College student-athlete and England international Emily Cassap has had many successes over the past year.
While studying at college, Emily has been an outstanding student-athlete representing England U17s in several squads all year whilst also staying on top of her A-Levels and remaining on course to achieve high grades.
Her latest achievement saw Emily travel across the world for the FIFA under-17 Women’s Dominican Republic World Cup 2024.
Emily has travelled with England U17s both at home and abroad, gaining some fantastic experiences along the way. She has been a regular squad member and has received exemplary feedback both for her football and education when away at training camps or international fixtures.
Head of Sports Academies, Partnerships and Wellbeing, Dr Michele Di Mascio said: “All of our Sports Academy student-athletes have the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects, and this summarises what we are all about. The College have shown commitment to support but we have shown commitment to ensure we prioritise both parts of the programme.
“Emily’s sporting achievements are sensational, and we are all extremely proud to see her flourish. Representing your country is an outstanding achievement and one that she will never forget.”
Players first travelled to Miami where they began preparations for the World Cup. From there, they continued to the Dominican Republic.
The semi-final took place on Wednesday 30th October, and then saw the final / play-off match on Sunday 3rd November 2024.
The squad returned home after a month of being away and achieved a remarkable 4th-place finish overall.
Emily is part of the college’s Sports Academies and Sunderland AFC Professional Game Academy (PGA), and was nominated and shortlisted for the AoC Sports Awards, where she won ‘Sport Performer of the Year’.
Emily added: “I feel so proud I’m able to play internationally as it’s a big achievement and I always look forward to doing it.
“The relationship with the college, my parents and clubs are really strong, and it helps me to balance my football and education allowing me to prioritise both of them.”
“It was great to go away for as long as I did for the world cup – it was a great experience getting to know my teammates more and gaining independence.”
Sunderland College welcomed Labour MP Lewis Atkinson to showcase its outstanding curriculum, facilities, and impact on the local community.
