Sunderland College student John Scott has been shortlisted for Construction Apprentice of the Year at the North East Apprenticeship Awards.
John represented Sunderland College in the Senior competitions in the Guild of Bricklayers where he came Runner up in the Senior section of the National Final.
John, who works for Persimmon Homes, became the first student to represent the college at the National Final of the Guild of Bricklayers competition where he finished runner up in the Senior section and has recently passed his apprenticeship end point assessment with three distinctions.
They are the latest of several achievements in his career which includes winning the Guild of Bricklayers Junior national title 2023.
John said: “I am delighted to have been nominated for this award, I have had an amazing three years at Sunderland College. Jimmy has not just taught me bricklaying skills he has also taught me life skills that I will take into my future career with Persimmon Homes.”
Jimmy Stobbart, Lecturer and Programme Leader for Multi Skill Construction & Building Services at Sunderland College added: “John has been an outstanding apprentice over the last three years, he has achieved so much during his time with us, not just as a Bricklayer but as a person.
“John has firmly cemented his place on our brickwork wall of fame, and I wish him every success in everything he does.”
The National Apprenticeship Awards will take place at Newcastle United’s St James Park on Thursday 11 July, and will be presented by former BBC The Apprentice contestant and entrepreneur Katie Bulmer Cook.
This event will feature 14 categories which recognise and honour the outstanding apprenticeship network thriving across the region.
In the previous year, there were over 230 enthusiastic attendees, including apprentices, training providers, and businesses from across County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland who champion apprenticeship programmes.
The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) has reached a major milestone as it has officially been marked as watertight.
