Students at Sunderland College are celebrating outstanding results after receiving their A-Levels, T Levels and technical qualifications results.

Hundreds of the college’s students received their results today (Thursday 14 August) from Bede and City campuses, with many accepting offers from some of the country’s leading universities, progressing to higher level apprenticeships or starting a new career.

Overall results this year included a 98% pass rate for students studying Level 3 technical qualifications with 83% of students achieving merits and distinctions.

Sunderland College’s Sixth Form achieved strong results in many A-Levels subjects such as English Language, English Literature, Film, Media Studies, and Sociology, which received high A*-C grades.

A significant proportion of Sunderland students gained successful entry to university with 95% of those gaining their first choice place.

It was double joy for twins Lara and Harrison – siblings who are two of quadruplets – who achieved AAA and AB and a Distinction respectively and will both be attending Leeds Beckett University in September.

Lara, who will be studying Speech and Language Therapy, said: “I was so nervous coming into college, I couldn’t sleep last night. When I opened the envelope, I was over the moon.”

Harrison, who will be studying Microbiology, added: “I knew I had got my place at university after checking the UCAS website so I was confident coming into campus but I’m really pleased.”

Fellow student Isaac will be progressing to a Degree Apprenticeship in Project Management at Gentoo after achieving A* A* B.

He said: “I felt really happy; I didn’t expect to do that well to be honest. I thought if I could get my target grades then I would be happy, but they were way higher than that.”

Sunderland AFC Women’s player Emily Cassap – part of the college’s Football Academy – was also celebrating after achieving A and B in Criminology and Law. She now plans to focus on football after signing her first professional contract earlier this year.

She said: “I was pleased, I put in a lot of hard work so I’m glad I got the results I wanted.”

Graphic Design student Isla received D*DD and is heading to Oxford Brooks University. She said: “I was so nervous, but I’m really happy with how my results turned out.”

Those students studying T Levels at Sunderland College also impressed, with students in Health, Early Years, Digital, Construction, and Engineering achieving a 94% pass rate with strong high grades in Health, and Design, Surveying and Planning in Construction.

One such student was Alicia who achieved a Merit in T Level Education and Childcare and will be progressing to the University of Sunderland to study Psychology and Counselling.

She said: “It was so much better than what I was expecting. When I opened the envelope I froze as I didn’t think I would get the grades to go to university. It was a shock.”

Results were available to collect from Bede and City campuses from 8am with those unable to pick up their results in person receiving an email later in the morning.

The college’s Matrix Standard accredited Careers team also hosted drop-in support and one-to-one appointments offering advice and guidance on grades, clearing and course options. Student recruitment staff from the Northumbria University and University of Sunderland were also on hand to guide students through the clearing process.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Toni Rhodes said: “It is always inspiring to see the achievements of our students across a broad range of Level 3 qualifications, and our students studying creative subjects within our sixth form this year have again done exceptionally well, as have our T Level students.

“We are always incredibly proud of all our students and staff that make days like today happen and we wish all out students’ huge success in their next steps.”

In September, the college’s housing and construction provision will be moving the the pioneering Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) at Riverside Sunderland.

Earlier this month, Sunderland College was named as one of 10 Construction Technical Excellence Colleges by the Department for Education following a highly competitive bidding process.

HICSA will lead the way as the North East CTEC, positioning the city at the forefront of the region’s construction and housing industry by raising industry standards, addressing skills shortages and driving economic growth.

From Thursday 21 August, Sunderland College will be enrolling 2025 school leavers for its wide range of A-Levels and technical subjects and courses including T Levels in Construction, Digital, Health, Education and Science.
