Carl joined Sunderland College in 2012, having being inspired by our teaching staff during his time here as a student.

After leaving school, I completed a BTEC Sport and Exercise Science and then a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at Sunderland College having studied here.

I received a first in my BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Development degree in 2011 and completed my PGCE PCET the following year, teaching across secondary and middle schools in before joining Sunderland College in 2012.

My academic experiences have seen me deliver Level 3 BTEC in further education, Level 4-5 Foundation Degrees and HND Coaching and Development. I have planned and taught across a wide variety of modules and have a range of professional qualifications to support this including Level 1 Coaching qualifications, Level 2 Gym Instructing and many CPD opportunities.

I have been a lecturer in sport at Sunderland College for the last eight years, where I have planned study programmes and wrote unit assessment and module guides. I support our Football Development Centre students with their bursary payments and ensure international students are regularly supported.

I also support our football coaches with player timetables and provide 1:1 guidance to parents around the courses we offer.

I am programme leader for the BTEC Level 3 Performance and Excellence qualifications and also co-ordinator of the Football Development Centre. My role includes the planning of course structure and delivery, with teaching, learning and assessment a high priority.

I am in regular contact with other programme leaders and professional coaches to ensure timetables are managed, as well as assisting our marketing team with our ongoing activity throughout the year and working with external companies in order to create higher education pathways. Recruitment is an important role of my job, which includes arranging one on ones and playing an active role in open evenings.

I was a student at Sunderland College from 2008-2010 and was inspired by lecturing staff – who are now my colleagues! Adhering to the core values and principles that the college has helped me to be expressive in my teaching style.

Working with young adults to allow them to embrace the learner journey, sharing experiences with them on a day to day basis that inspires them to be better every day.

Seeing my learners progress from the first to second year of their programmes, complete their studies and be successful with their first-choice university offer.

Seeing learners apply their effort and achieve by setting standards that will provide them with the skills they need to succeed beyond their time at Sunderland College.
