Engineering apprentice George Cram has followed up winning North East Apprentice of the Year by being named a finalist in the National Apprentice of the Year category of the Make UK Manufacturing Awards.

George began his journey with Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) in 2020 as an apprentice and has worked closely with the Manufacturing Process Engineering team to implement several advancements across the production line.

Having recently completing his Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing at Sunderland College, George has begun a new role as a Process Technician while studying an HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering to take him one step closer to becoming an Engineer.

George said: “It was a massive achievement for myself to be the winner of the Make UK Awards ‘Engineering Apprentice Final Year’ in my region. I am excited for the national event, and I will be going on to try and win that as well.”

Make UK celebrates British manufacturing and manufacturers, stimulating success for manufacturing businesses. They empower individuals, inspiring the next generation.

The winners of each region go onto to compete at national level, with the winners announced at a Gala Dinner and black-tie event on Thursday 25th January at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Wayne Smith, Trainer/Assessor Technical (Engineering), who encouraged George to enter the Make UK Awards due to his excellent work, said: “It’s a big step in the right direction for Sunderland college. It shows that the apprenticeship scheme that the college offers gets apprentices noticed and that they can achieve a multitude of new skills when working in partnership with the college and their employers.

“It will hopefully inspire young people in school to take on an apprenticeship as their next step in their education.”

Mike O’Neil, Chief Operating Officer at AEM, added: “George was our first apprentice at AEM and it was a proud moment to see his hard work recognised by winning this regional award. We now look forward to supporting George in the national final in January. Congratulations George, well deserved.”
