Sunderland College has been selected to receive £5,000 as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme to continue making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of underprivileged young people across the city.
In September, Tesco customers at the Sunderland Extra store were given the chance to take part in a lucky dip to find a specially created gold version of the retailer’s famous blue voting token.
Sunderland College was one of three local charities that customers could vote for to receive the £5,000 Golden Grant, which will help the college offer a free breakfast club at its City and Bede campuses to its thousands of students.
Craig Clark, Student Participation Coordinator at Sunderland College, said: “The Golden Grant Award will significantly benefit the young people we support at Sunderland College.
“Many of our students face extreme poverty, so providing free breakfasts will ensure they can focus on their studies without the distraction of hunger, enhancing both their physical and mental well-being.”
Over 100 Tesco stores across the country took part in the Golden Grants event, with £500,000 in total being donated to good causes that help children and young people.
The grants are awarded twice a year as part of Tesco’s £8 million Stronger Starts programme, in partnership with Groundwork UK, and helps schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, such as breakfast clubs or snacks, as well as purchasing equipment for healthy activities.
Since Tesco launched its Community Grants programme in 2016, more than £120 million has been given to more than 67,000 local schools and community groups.
Sunderland College developed a city endorsed programme focused on community that celebrated difference, and pride in place.
