Students at Sunderland College raised hundreds of pounds and collected dozens of Easter Eggs to support the Durham Easter Egg Run.
The collection was part of a Motorcycle and Road Safety event held at the college’s Bede Campus which gave students the opportunity to learn how to keep themselves and others safe on the roads and raise awareness of accident prevention, saving lives and promoting responsible behaviour.
More than 300 students volunteering throughout the day with activities including a Motorcycle Display and a Mini Hazards Obstacle Course.
While fun, each activity helped students to think about how, as drivers, they can be more aware of and courteous towards the more vulnerable road-user groups including pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
Various motorcycle groups such as BeeSeene Motorcycle Clothing, Northumbria Blood Bikes, Angel Motorcycle Training, Northumbria Advanced Motorcyclists, attended the event to share their expertise.
Sean Smith, Student Support Officer at Sunderland College, who organised the event said: “I was very thrilled to see our students engaging with the activities and the ethos of the event. To provide opportunities like this really enhances the student life experience within the college, whilst also impacting positively on society – in this case road-users.
“To be able to help and support in something, which can literally mean life-or-death, I feel is a very valuable reason to run such awareness activities.”
The Durham Easter Egg Run involves up to 1,000 motorcycles travelling through Darlington to deliver Easter Eggs to children’s hospital wards. Some of the charities benefitting from the run this year include the Teenage Cancer Trust, British Heart Foundation, Feeding Families, and Missed A Beat, among others.
The college raised £214.46 for the charities supported by the Durham Easter Egg Run and collected 53 Easter Eggs.
