What’s it all about?

This course is for those that wish to gain greater understanding of organisations and how they function. The course is for people who would like a highly regarded business qualification that focuses on practical skills and knowledge. It will help improve your job prospects within many different types of organisations, in addition to providing a platform for further study.

You are able to apply for this course if the following applies to you:

- You are over 18 years old
- You have a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths
- You have a relevant Level 3 qualification
- You have at least 48 UCAS points

For example, this might be from a GNVQ Advanced, a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma, an AVCE, an NVQ or one A-Level pass.

Alternatively, if you have appropriate work experience and are aged over 21, we will also be happy to consider your application.

All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English need to demonstrate capability in English at IELTS 5.5. You must also have reading and writing at a 5.5 or equivalent.

Teaching:

On this course you will experience a combination of teaching and learning styles, including:

- Practical and theoretical classroom teaching
- Library drop-in sessions
- Directed work with other students
- Directed private study

Assessments will incorporate workplace knowledge.

There are 2 Pearson set research projects.

You may have reports, portfolios, case studies and timed assessments to complete.

Each unit is assessed individually and via different means. In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor.

Independent learning:

When not attending lectures, seminars and practical sessions or other timetabled session you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research, preparing coursework assignment and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

Your independent learning is supported by a range of facilities including the learning centre and the business team.

Academic support:

Our HE Academic Support Tutor provides help in the following areas -

- Study skills (including reading, writing, note-taking, and presentation skills)
- Written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy)
- Academic writing (including how to reference)
- Research skills (in conjunction with the learning centres)
- Critical thinking and understanding arguments
- Revision, assessment, and examination skills (including time management)

Teaching staff:

You will be taught by an experienced teaching team, whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes senior lecturers, professional practitioners with industry experience. Our teaching is informed by the relevant practice within the sector and 100% of our lecturers have a teaching qualification.

Assessment:

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each modules normally contains at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor.

There is a ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module.

Assessment methods include presentations, reports, and portfolios. The grades from formal assessment count towards your module mark.

Feedback:

You will receive feedback on formative assessments and on summative assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

For formal coursework assessment we aim to provide you with feedback within 21 working days of hand-in.

Level 2 English and Maths are required for this course.

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours and independent learning. Your time commitments will vary depending on whether you are studying part-time or full-time.

The course is available to study both part-time blended and full-time.

Class dates and times will be given at the start of each unit.

Whilst not in class you will be given a schedule of study. There will still be a member of the team available for either face-to-face or online contact.

Timetables are normally available at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week.

The course will help improve your job prospects within many different types of organisations, in addition to providing a platform for further study.

The blended approach offers flexibility, with both in classroom sessions and individual work, whilst still having contact with the Business and team and your class peers for support.

The HNC is working at Level 4. This allows you to settle into study whilst giving you knowledge and understanding of the basic functions of a business and builds your academic skills and depth of knowledge within the business arena.

You will study 8 units over the year.

- Leadership and Management
- Accounting Principles
- Managing a Successful Business Project

This module map provides a list of the modules that make up your course. Each module is worth a specified number of credits. You must take modules worth a total of 120 credits at each level of the course. Our teaching is informed by current practice and modules may change periodically to reflect developments in the sector. What’s next?

After the completion of this course you will have 120 credits and can progress on to a range of study options in Higher Education, such as the HND in Business (Management), or the second year of BA top up programme.
