What’s it all about?

This qualification allows learners to develop underpinning knowledge whilst practicing skills that could be used within employment in the animal care industry.

Prior Level 1 students are eligible for this course. There is no remit for GCSE.

To gain the qualification, students must successfully achieve 30 credits via assignments, verbal questioning and practical assessments in their designated modules.

Learners must also complete 150 hours of work experience in an animal care setting.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career.

If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/or English, we will support you to improve your skills.

You will have the opportunity to take part in a work placement in the animal care industry.

As part of the course, you will take part in 150 hours of placement in industry.

Health and safety checks are completed by the college and support from skills coaches is available.

We have a number of links to industry to ensure you can gain an outstanding learning experience with us and you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in the animal care industry.

You will study 12 hours a week in college and will be expected to take some time outside of college to complete assignment work and external work experience. This does not include remit for Maths and English sessions.

This course runs for 4 days per week and could take place Monday-Friday between 9am-4pm. Timetables will be issued at the start of term.

The aim of this course is to develop your skills and knowledge in animal care, in order to allow you to progress to further learning/training, and/or a career in the animal care industry.

This course includes four units. Modules can include:

- Animal accommodation
- Animal feeding
- Contributing to the care of exotic animals
- Introduction to zoo animals

Please note, modules may vary.

City & Guilds

This course is worth 30 credits.

Students will also complete masterclasses, ranging from animal first aid to health and safety.

What’s next?

Students may progress onto the next level of study in animal care on completion of the course. There are also different pathways that you can take, such as dog grooming or becoming an animal nursing assistant.
