What’s it all about?

This course is for people interested in working in the motor vehicle industry painting vehicles or those wishing to gain qualifications to enhance their current job role.

This VRQ covers the technical needs for basic repair and preparation procedures. It provides essential knowledge and skills for vehicle body paint operators, working on a wide range of vehicles, in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body paint businesses.

You will need Maths and English GCSE's at grade 4-9. Or a relevant Level 1 Automotive qualification.

The assessment is made up of two components which are set by the IMI:

- Practical tasks
- Online testing

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm. Days and times of study are subject to change. Timetables are confirmed at the start of term.

The learning programme involves learners studying both the theory and practical aspects, including:

- Preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces
- Preparing and applying fillers and foundation materials to vehicles
- Repairing minor paint defects.

Learners will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

What’s next?

You could progress to a Level 3 motor vehicle course or gain employment in the automotive industry.

This qualification also forms the knowledge component (technical certificate) of the IMI SSC Accident Repair Apprenticeship Framework (for Paint). When an apprentice has achieved a Level 2 apprenticeship, they can then choose to broaden their education and training in other ways from this firm base.
