What’s it all about?

This course is for people working in the motor vehicle industry painting vehicles or those wishing to gain qualifications to enhance their current job role. You will learn the correct procedures for applying base, top and clear coats mixing and matching techniques and special effect finishing.

This Level 3 qualification covers both theory and practical aspects, including:

- The preparation and application of procedures
- The diagnosis and rectifying of paint faults
- Working with plastic materials and components
- Preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces
- Establishing paint defects
- Applying topcoats and completing refinishing
- Colour matching

Learners also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

This qualification also forms the knowledge component (technical certificate) of the IMI SSC Accident Repair Advanced Apprenticeship Framework (for Paint).

The course is the third level for vehicle painting you will need the Level 2, and basic literacy skills.

The assessment is made up of three components which are set by IMI Awards:

- Practical tasks
- Pnline testing
- Written assignment/coursework

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.
