Catering students have recently been involved in a number of great activities as part of a ‘meet and exceed’ week.
All students across the catering curriculum were involved in various activities throughout the week. They were given the chance to visit Riley’s Fish Shack, North Shields Fish Quay, Ramside Hall Hotel, Newcastle’s Grainger Market and The Stadium of Light.
Students were involved in cooking challenges, master classes involving butchery, game, curing and dough and catered for the HE graduation ceremony. They also had a chance to meet with ex students who have all gone on to do brilliant and diverse things within the industry and to listen to a guest speaker about his food truck business.
Meet and Exceed week was a chance for catering students to explore new avenues of interest and to expand the knowledge of what they can move onto in the industry once they have completed their studies at Sunderland College.
Rob Stewart, Sunderland College Hospitality, Tourism and Engagement Curriculum Manager said:
“To be able to open up so many avenues and to get so much enrichment activity packed into one week was brilliant. It takes a lot of planning and we have learned loads this time round so as we move forward, these weeks will only become more and more valuable to our learners; not just from an enrichment point of view, but being able to spend quality one-to-one time with their lecturers looking at their individual targets.”
Alicia Parkes Level One Diploma in Introduction to Professional Cookery Student added:
“We had such a great week experiencing a number of different activities. We all finished the week thinking ‘when can we do this all again?’ it was amazing!”
Students and staff are looking forward to a follow up set of events during the second meet and exceed week of the year taking place in February.
