Sunderland College BTEC Photography and Arts students recently had the opportunity to visit Newcastle’s Side Gallery, to take inspiration from the fantastic photography and capture great shots of the City.
Tucked away on the Newcastle Quayside, Side Gallery is a small exhibition space promoting challenging work which is engaged with people’s lives and landscapes. The gallery aims to tell stories that often get disregarded and is dedicated to celebrating the wider tradition of humanist documentary photography.
This visit was a great opportunity for students to appreciate the work of professional artists and photographers, whilst familiarising themselves with the camera equipment they will use throughout their study.
Robin Cowings, Sunderland College Lecturer in Creative Arts said:
“This was a fantastic educational and creative induction opportunity for our students. The visit has helped to encourage experimental and creative image making. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to take photographs outside of the College environment, they shot some brilliant images. It was a really great experience for them.”
Visiting Newcastle gave students the chance to explore themes to do with the ‘Urban Environment’. The photographic work produced by the students throughout the visit helped them to form ideas and work towards their first assignment on the course.
