The Level 2 Certificate in Preparation for Working in the Engineering Manufacturing Industry (Automotive Pathway) is a full-time study programme designed to prepare learners for employment within the engineering and manufacturing sector, with a strong automotive focus.
This course provides the essential practical skills, technical knowledge, and workplace behaviours required to begin a career in modern manufacturing environments. With an emphasis on automotive production and engineering processes, learners gain hands-on experience that reflects real industry standards.
The qualification supports progression into apprenticeships, trainee roles, or entry-level employment within engineering and automotive manufacturing companies.
You will need grade 3- 9 in GCSE Maths and English. Or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Learners are supported throughout by experienced tutors with industry backgrounds.
Grade 3 (or above) in English and Maths is beneficial, as it supports success in technical calculations, measurement, written work, and communication within engineering environments.
Additional support may be available to help learners develop these skills alongside the programme. OR a Level 1 in a relavent subject
As part of the programme, learners will have access to a work placement opportunity within a local engineering or automotive manufacturing company.
This placement allows learners to:
• Experience a real manufacturing environment
• Apply practical skills developed in the workshop
• Develop workplace behaviours and professionalism
• Build confidence working alongside industry professionals
• Strengthen their CV and future job applications
The placement supports progression into employment and complements the guaranteed interview offered at the end of the course.

This is a full-time study programme delivered over 4 days per week 9.00am-5.00pm
Learners are expected to attend all sessions, participate fully in both practical and theory lessons, and complete any required coursework or independent study tasks.
The aims of the course are to:
- Develop core engineering and manufacturing skills
- Introduce automotive production principles and processes
- Build knowledge of health & safety in engineering environments
- Improve understanding of tools, equipment, and materials
- Develop teamwork, communication, and employability skills
- Prepare learners for progression into employment or apprenticeships
The qualification consists of five mandatory units, designed to prepare learners for the engineering manufacturing workplace:
– Understanding the Engineering Manufacturing Environment - Learners explore how manufacturing organisations operate, including health & safety, job roles, communication systems, and production processes
– Understanding the Importance of Sustainability within Automotive Manufacturing - This unit focuses on environmental responsibility, sustainable materials, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and the evolving role of sustainability in the automotive sector
– Demonstrate Hand Skills in a Manufacturing Environment - Learners develop practical skills using hand tools, measuring equipment, and workshop practices, following safe and accurate working procedures
– Preparing for an Interview - This unit supports employability skills, including CV preparation, interview techniques, workplace expectations, and professional presentation
– Solving Work-Related Problems - Learners develop problem-solving techniques used in manufacturing settings, including teamwork, communication, and continuous improvement approaches
Successful completion of the course can lead to:
• An Engineering or Automotive Apprenticeship
• Entry-level roles in manufacturing and production
• Progression to a Level 3 Engineering qualification
All learners who successfully complete the programme are guaranteed an interview with a local manufacturing company, providing a direct route into employment.
