Creative Media students at Sunderland are working in collaboration with the BBC’s The Social as part of The Social Connects project which will see their videos showcased on the award-winning digital platform.
The first year students, who are studying Creative Media Practice, will be mentored by content experts from The Social including Senior Content Producer Aime Igoe who visited Bede Campus in October to officially launch the project.
Over the next six months, they will develop their digital storytelling skills, learn how to pitch and develop ideas, understand the importance of creating good social media and digital-first content and enhance their career prospects through a series of workshops and masterclasses from industry professionals.
In 2024, the students will be set a brief as a final project to create a 2-3 minute piece of content where they will put everything they have learned into practice, with their videos featuring on The Social’s website. Selected content will also be promoted on BBC social media channels.
Sally Taylor, Lecturer and Programme Leader for Film & Media, said: “We’re so excited to be collaborating with the BBC’s The Social team.
“This will be a fantastic real-world experience for our students working alongside industry professionals to develop their skills and knowledge which will help them stand out from the crowd in the future.
“We would like to thank Aime Igoe from The Social and Helen Amess [BBC North Outreach Manager] for coming to Bede Campus to meet our students and officially launch the project. We can’t wait to see what amazing content our students produce.”
The Social is a digital platform that develops creative new talent and ideas, and commissions content to be published across the BBC which reaches millions of people every week.
