Launch of student business venture runs smoothly

Four students have launched an exciting business venture after scooping a £1,000 prize in City of Sunderland College’s annual Dragon’s Den competition.

AS Level students Christopher Johnston, Rosie Pattison, Ruhi Bhugra and Rachel Jenner have officially opened a new milkshake and smoothie bar named ‘Smoooth’ at the College’s Bede Centre to offer tasty and healthy treats to their fellow learners.

17-year old, Rosie Pattison said: “The opening was such a success with a good mix of staff and students attending. We really appreciate the turnout and think it’s a positive sign to what lies ahead. We’re looking forward to the student response in the coming weeks.”

The group of entrepreneurs were judged as one of three winners in competition earlier this year. They impressed an expert panel of judges who include: Jonathon Bruce, a financial consultant; Neil Price, an Enterprise Talent Scout for the Business Innovation Centre (BIC); Alison Donaldson, a lecturer in business at the College’s Bede Centre and Rob Coxan, a regional manager for British Gas.

Ruth Magnus, curriculum leader at City of Sunderland College, said: “I am extremely proud of all four students for the hard work and dedication they have shown in turning their business idea into a reality.

“They thoroughly deserve every success with their venture. The opening has been a real celebration of their achievement and will be a welcome addition to our common room facilities for students.”

Monika Kasprzak, Enrichment Officer at the College’s Bede Centre, said: “It’s been a pleasure to celebrate the launch of Smoooth with Rosie, Ruhi, Rachel and Chris.

“It is fantastic that these young, creative, and entrepreneurial individuals have been consistent in pursuing their business idea. They have impressed us all with their remarkable enthusiasm and determination over the last few weeks to get their business up and running.”

The new business will offer healthy juices and smoothies to learners which are packed with vitamins as well as a few extra tasty treats including milkshakes made with your favourite chocolate snack.
