A group of Art and Design students from Sunderland College will be selling their creations at Sunderland’s Christmas market on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th December.
The Visual Arts pop-up stall will sell a range of handmade mackem-themed Christmas gifts including bags, cards and prints in various styles. Each design has been created by students using techniques learned in classes throughout their course.
This is the first year for Sunderland Christmas market at Park Lane which is part of Sunderland BID’s Christmas programme. The marketplace has recently undergone a transformation as part of a community project which saw over 3,000 students from Sunderland College cleaning pavements, picking up litter from the streets and painting shutters.
The pop-up stall, which has been organised by two members of staff within the Arts Academy, aims to encourage students to sell their work and build their confidence to set them up for a career in art. The stall will also provide our second year students with new skills including working with the public and essential business skills. If the Christmas market proves to be a success, the stall will become an annual event in Sunderland and an ideal opportunity for students to sell their work.
Hollie Marshall, Art and Design lecturer, said “This is a valuable experience for the Art & Graphics learners. It has given them the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques as well as working on a live brief, which is similar to what would be expected in the creative industries”
Nadia Heron, a first year Level 3 Art and Design student said “I am very proud and grateful that my design has been chosen for some of the Christmas market products. I am excited to sell them to the local community. I think this will be an excellent opportunity and will give me an insight how to sell my artwork in the future.”
Along with arts and crafts, Sunderland College hospitality and catering students from City Bistro will be selling festive treats including homemade Christmas cake from the City Bistro stall. Park Lane Christmas market is open Thursday – Sunday, 10-4pm until Christmas Eve.
For more festive fun, don’t miss our Christmas Fun Day on 20th December, 1.30-4.30pm in our Arts Academy at Bede Campus. Our staff and students will be selling more handmade Christmas gifts and there will be Christmas activities on offer for children including card making sessions, Christmas sing-alongs and the opportunity to meet Santa in our grotto.
